It’s evident. Africa is rising. Our population continues to grow. And so is the demand for food. In this light, we farmers resorted to embracing modern farming practices to align with the objectives of the Green Revolution. It was fruitful, production peaked eliminating dire poverty and hunger.

Currently, the effects of the revolution are everywhere. Forests were cut. Our inputs were inorganic. Thus, Climate change and Cancer prevalence. It’s why we seek sustainable farming practices; to eliminate poverty, hunger and create resilience in our farming systems.

As a corollary to resilience, small-scale farmers are key. They are co-authors of the destiny that awaits sustainable agriculture. However, most of us, field officers, and development partners have insisted on a one-size fits-all in our business development services. The farmers are different based on their farming enterprises. Their experiences differs that informs need for customization of business development services. For example, let farmers in a Cassava and Dairy enterprises attend different sessions. It’s expensive but farmers experience combined with research-informed analysis on their enterprise becomes easier to comprehend and implement. 

When farmers come together, the will to adopt sustainable farming practices becomes a reality for Sustainable Development Goals towards No Poverty and Hunger. This is because sustainable farming can be implemented for production that takes into consideration mother Earth and it’s inhabitants. Sustainable farming remains the way to a Poverty and Hunger free world. As small-scale farmers it’s our obligation to make this vision a reality. Let’s make development partners realize our experience with changes in farming and climate change has influenced our farm management practices. They are committed. So are we.
